How Disgusting Is Your Carpet?

The average carpet can contain 8 times its weight in dust, dirt and other unwanted particles and contains hundreds of times more bacteria per square inch than a toilet seat. And that’s just the average! This test will help you figure out how nasty your carpet actually is – and even though you might not want to know, think about how often your kids crawl on your carpet and how this knowledge could help you prevent exposing your family to harmful chemicals, bacteria and allergens.

Spring Cleaning

Spring is in the air! As it starts to heat up, many feel the need to do a little bit of “spring cleaning.” Although nobody really wants to spend their time cleaning and organizing, it gives a nice sense of accomplishment once everything is in the proper place. Like the old saying goes, “Out with the old, in with the new.” Especially in this case, spring is a good time of year to not only get rid of unnecessary “things” but also to enjoy time with family in nicer weather.

But with warmer temperatures also comes an increase in allergens. Chem-Dry recently conducted a national study showing that Chem-Dry removes 98% of allergens from carpets and upholstery! The second part of the study proved that Chem-Dry also removes 89% of airborne bacteria, improving indoor air quality. These tests are yet another proof that choosing Chem-Dry of Irvine/Newport leads to a healthier home!

Post Valentine's Cleanup

Valentine’s Day is not a widely loved holiday across the board (ironic, right?). Those that love it, though, love it. And, likewise, those that hate it, hate it. We’re not here to play favorites because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, whether your carpets are covered with chocolate stains and candle wax, or pizza and ice cream stains, there is still a mess to be cleaned!

Not to toot our own horn, but we’re pretty good at spot & stain removal. It’s true that some stains can be removed fairly easily without the need to call in a professional carpet cleaner. However, for those stubborn stains that won’t come out, even after tireless scrubbing efforts, it’s time to call in the pros. From lipstick and fingernail polish to red soda and markers, we’re confident in our ability to remove even the toughest stains.

January 12, 2015

January is always an interesting month. Most don’t like it because it’s colder or grayer than other months. Others don’t prefer it because it’s in the dead winter and it sometimes seems to drag on forever. However, with every gray cloud, during this cold period, is a silver lining.

January is a great time to get things done, and not just with carpet cleaning. The holiday madness has ended and we have a few free weeks before the craziness known as “Valentine’s Day” ensues. It may be a little bit chillier this time of year, but that means more time to re-organize the home and recover from damages that the last holidays made.

Although this may be a dreaded task, you’re not alone in the cleanup process. At Chem-Dry of Irvine/Newport, we’re more than happy to restore your home to its previous glory. We offer a carpet cleaning service that cleans deeper and dries quicker than many of the carpet cleaners in Irvine. We also offer upholstery cleaning and Pet Urine Removal Treatment (for the little puppy that Santa brought).

The Top 5 Scariest Things Hiding in Your Carpet

Think about this: every day, you walk on your carpet, your pets play on it and your kids crawl on it. Just how safe do you think that is? Just in time for Halloween – or, just after Halloween – we’ve made a list of the 5 scariest things hiding in your carpet that a vacuum cleaner can’t get rid of.

5. Allergens.  If you’re like over half of the population in the United States, you suffer from allergies – and if you don’t, chances are that someone in your family does. Few people know that carpet virtually acts as an allergen storage unit, allowing them to be active in your home all year round and make you continually miserable.

4. Chemicals. You can’t even imagine how many harmful substances are lodged in your carpet fibers – and it doesn’t just happen over time. New carpets typically house formaldehyde, toluene, styrene, acetone and benzene, some of which are even considered to cause cancer by the EPA. Even the new carpet smell that everyone loves is caused by 4-PC, a chemical that is known to cause eye and respiratory problems.

3. Mold. Even though steam cleaning can potentially help your carpet in some ways, mold prevention is not one of them. During the steam cleaning process, gallons of water are dumped on to your carpet, pushing dirt and grime deep down into your padding and creating a breeding ground for mold and bacteria underneath your carpet.

2. Bacteria. If you can believe it, the bottom of your shoes carry more bacteria than a toilet seat. Do you wear your shoes when you’re walking on your carpet? If so, you’re tracking millions of kinds of bacteria, harmful or not, onto your carpet, not to mention what your kids and pets bring into the house on a daily basis. Yikes.

1. Dust Mites.  And you thought spiders were scary! Just look at that thing. There’s no wonder this tops our list of the scariest things living in your carpet. These things are what scientists call cosmopolitan pyroglyphidae, and they live in your carpet and survive on flakes of your skin. Aside from being incredibly creepy, they are a common cause of allergic and asthma symptoms throughout the world and can induce wheezing. Disgusting, huh?

Even though those are pretty scary things to have living in your home, there’s no reason to worry. Chem-Dry of Irvine/Newport in Costa Mesa uses an all-natural process that is safe for your home and that reduces the risk of mold and bacteria, in addition to the fastest dry times on the market. Give us a call and let us help you get rid of what’s been hiding in your carpet.
